SPANGDAHLEM AB

 Special thanks
to Lynn Cairney
(and her girl Athena!)

She provided ALL of the information
on Spangdahlem!

BoardSpang1.jpg
Spangdahlem is located in the far west of Germany.
(red star on map)

The largest city nearby is Trier and the largest town is Bitburg.

Bitburg is home to the Bitburger Brewery with the famous bumper sticker!

"Bitte ein Bit" or Please, a Bit"...
"Please may I have another Bitburger."

Horse Boarding & Carriage Rides

Familie Dohm

Maria and Klaus Dohm
Pazhof
54647 Dudeldorf

Dudeldorf is the Village next to Spangdahlem
and this is where we board our two horses!!
I can not begin to say enough
wonderful things about the Dohm family!
This is a working farm where they make their own hay.
They are very hard workers who have built this farm
literally from scratch over three decades!

Board includes hay feeding in the morning,
turnout with hay in the winter,
turnout in pasture in the summer.
You supply your own grain,
they will feed it in the winter when the horses come in.

Indoor Arena (in German "halle" pronounced: "hall-uh")
Jumps, Trot Poles, Dressage Letters

As of April 2009 it is 200 euro / month.

BoardSpang2.jpg

Left: Riding Hall, Middle: Upper Barn, Right: Dohm Family Home
We ride on the trails behind the barn and into those forests!

BoardSpang3.jpg

In the above photo, you can see the base in the distance.
The horses are turned out in these pastures in summer.

BoardSpang4.jpg

This is the front drive where you can literally take a trail ride
straight from the barn and have miles and miles of trails.

BoardSpang5.jpg

This is our German friend, Nathalie, on her horse Radino,
taking a sunset ride!

BoardSpang6.jpg

In the summer, there are trails like this...

BoardSpang7.jpg

And this...

BoardSpang8.jpg

And you'll discover empty pastures like this
where you are allowed to ride!!
We walked the entire to check for holes or
uneveness and it was good to go for a gallop!

BoardSpang9.jpg

Woo-hoo!!

BoardSpang10.jpg

Meeting up with a family who was picnicking in the meadow.
The local Germans are very friendly and usually speak some English.
We try to be respectful and speak a little German.

Maria offers a wonderful service of Carriage Rides

through the countryside

with her team of draft horses, Billy and Bobby.

They are a breed specialized from the Black Forest

and there are less than 800 left in the world.

The Airman & Family Readiness Center

has sponsored Pumpkin Patch Rides

for the children of deployed parents

and the PTSA has hired Maria for their children as well.

The carriage holds 15 adults or about 15 kids

with a few adults to supervise.

   carriage1.jpg

We used this as a going-away gift

for our Group Commander's wife.

Maria took us to a beautiful picnic area

and we poured delicious German wine all the way!

Speak to Maria about prices.

I apologize, I don't have the exact name for this stable.
However, when searching for stables,
we asked for availability and they were in the middle of a renovation.

      dudeldorf1.jpg

A very nice couple live in the house on the right
and the stable and pasture are in the back.
The renovation was completed in 2007.

This stable does not have an indoor arena
but has turnout and a walker.

Just behind the house is this pasture.

Bitburg Stables

Bitburg Air Base is part of Spangdahlem Air Base.

They are about 15 minutes apart.

This stable is right outside of Bitburg's main gate.

Bitburg.jpg

This is the view as you leave the main gate on B50.

In 2006, we were quoted 250 euro / month.

This may be a good choice for you

if you don't want your horse turned out into a herd.

Owners must turn their horses out themselves for grazing time.

They have a small indoor arena, mostly used for lessons and clinics.

These are beautiful grounds in the midst of vineyards

where many competitions take place.

You can also take lessons on more experienced horses.

My horse is very young.

I chose to come here to ride a more experienced horse

that could be the one teaching me!

There are different trainers and lessons at various times.

It's best to go to the grounds and speak with the barn manager

about lessons, your experience level and your goals.

  wittlick4.jpg  wittlick5.jpg

There are always shows taking place in both dressage and jumping.

so I went to watch.

It was a charming and friendly atmosphere.

This facility is in the town of Spangdahlem

about 1 mile from the Main Gate.

Maria and her daughter teach horseback

riding lessons to childen and adults.

The arena is small and more for young riders.

A lot of American children take lessons here.

When leaving the main gate, take the 2nd exit in round-about

(pasisng the exit that takes you to the A60)

This is a farmers road. Take it to the t-intersection and go left.

Sonnenhof will be immediately on the right -- a bright orange building.

Trainer: Friedhelm Koenigsfeld
(Herr Koenigsfeld or Mr. Koenigsfeld)

This is a trainer I took lessons from in Wittlich,
but he rotates barns so you should call to check.
He and his trainers speak English very well.
Herr Koenigsfeld is one of the course designers
for jumping competitions.
We saw one of his courses in Aachen.

    GERMAN BARN RULES:

If you have any questions or misunderstandings at your barn,
you really need to ask and clarify
so you know the rules and expectations.

It is more of the American culture
to expect rules to be explained or posted.

But the German culture functions well with rules that are "known".

General riding rules for the indoor arena may be different
than the rules at your barn in the States, especially for English riders.

Here in Germany, you ride in the arena "left to left".

If I'm riding in the arena and there is a rider toward me,
my left shoulder should meet that rider's left shoulder.

Before opening the door to the indoor arena,
it is protocol to ask, "Tor frei?"
pronounced "Tor fry," meaning "Is the door free to open?"

When they holler back with "Ja",
then you may slide the door open and enter.

"Einen moment" means, "Just a moment" and then you need to wait.
