LEEHAC HORSESHOWS & MORE

WHEELER air force base

The Wheeler AFB arena was the hub for LEEHAC Horseshows

in the 1970's.

The pretty gray thoroughbred gelding 'Loaa' was the focus of this photo. It's also the best picture of the arena's grandstand that I have.

Just past the grandstand (at the back left of the arena), the bleachers are filled with additional spectators.

This LEEHAC Open Show was sponsored by the Kaala Wranglers 4-H Club on Oct 7, 1973.

    This shot of the

grandstand, taken from outside the arena, provides another view of the structure.

Photo snapped during the Grand National Jr Horse Show Benefit held March 3, 1974.

By the way, March 3, 1974 was the same day that Prince Charles of England played polo at

Mokuleia Polo Field!

In the background of the photos above, taken on June 16, 1974

at the WINHAC and LEEHAC State Finals Horse Show,

you can see the Clubhouse and I'm pretty sure Wheeler's Tack Shop

as well as some covered storage areas.

The blue saddle pad on the horse and the blue shipping boots

were prizes that were awarded from that Tack Shop.

These days, the roving tack trailer from the 1970's

can be found parked at V.O. Ranch Products in Waimanalo.

Both of the above photos were taken at the Wheeler Arena.

The above left photo was taken sometime late 1973

and the above right photo was taken the weekend

of May 11-12, 1974 at the 7th Annual A.H.S.A. Horse Show

sponsored by the Saddle Club of Wheeler.

I'm pretty sure it was the line-up for the Amy Rich Medal Class.

All of the photos (above and below) were taken Oct 7, 1973

at a LEEHAC Open Show sponsored by the Kaala Wranglers.

Sadly, I don't have any pictures of the paddocks; I mainly visited Wheeler for horse shows.

Back then, the paddocks were located at the top of the big hill while the arena, outside course,

and clubhouse / tack shop /  office etc were located at the bottom.

There was a little bit of a trip to get from one to the other.

Susan Allen riding her mare Quarter mare Bobbie Tee Miss -- the Scurry Race (top left) was all the rage.

I have been trying to locate my friend Susan and her sister Sarah for years

so I'm posting this in hopes that she googles herself someday and this pops up. :)

They boarded at Barbers Point but these photos were taken at Wheeler.

I know there are others who have better photos and information on this facility than me.

Please let me know if you do -- I'll be happy to share them!!
